Won't say enough to get in trouble, but enough to get you started....

Many of the DLL's that are improved in Vista Work In XP.
Media Player Classic will render with out using a texture service.

Subject: Re: Encoding file with more than 2000 pixels width

Hello,

OK, so I give a few more details. I use a dual core Pentium D 3 GHz, a ATI
FireGL and dual channel DDR2 667 MHz memory for playback, and I can play
three 1080p samples from www.wmvhd.com simultaneously without dropped
frames. It should be easily possible to play 2k in real time, maybe even 4k
(if the graphics card supports 4k surfaces...). I don't care about encoding
time, but yes, it takes a very long time to encode at such high resolutions.

I'm very happy with the WMV codec because it offers a very good compression
rate vs. decoding complexity ratio. The decoder is also able to utilize both
CPU cores. The only problem is the 2000 pixel limit :-( Anyway, I neighter
want to play 2k nor 4k, I want to play stereoscopic HDV content. We use two
Sony FX1 in side-by side arrangement, one for each eye. In post production,
these recordings (2 x 1440 x 1080) are eighter merged to a side-by-side
(2880 x 1080) or over/under (1440 x 2160) video file. That's why I need more
than 2000 pixels resolution.

As I told before, it is possible to encode at more than 2000 pixel
resolution simply by checking the 'use source resolution' checkbox in
Windows Media Encoder instead of specifying the resolution manually.
However, the Windows Media Player (German version on Windows XP Pro) doesn't
play it. In GraphEdit, the WMVideo Decoder DMO refuses to connect to the
source filter.

Surprisingly, I was able to play my 2880 x 1080 sample file on Windows Vista
Beta 1 (CPU load about 50%) although it also contains Windows Media Player
10 (but Engish instead of German version). This, at least, proves that
encoding works properly at >2000 pixels, however, I would prefer to play my
files on Windows XP instead of Windows Vista ;-)

There is another problem when playing files with more than 2048 pixels with
on graphics hardware which texture size is limited to 2048 pixels (e.g. my
ATI FireGL). In this case you see only half of the image and wrong colors.
This is not a problem of the WMV decoder but of the Video Mixing Renderer.
When I use my own rendering filters, it plays fine.

In conclusion, I still need a solution to play >2000 pixel files in Windows
XP...

Peter
