Might want to check if the video file has been indexed.

You could use the Windows Media File Editor that comes with the Windows
Media 9 Encoder.

Open the file and then re-save and index.

 Yes, I know.  I have working asx files for some videos that were
encoded at various bitrates and codec's so wanted to rerun them through
cleaner as a batch so they all have the same codec, but when I move the
new files over to the server, the videos wont play.  I've changed
nothing in the asx file nor have I changed file names so in theory it
should have worked, but doesn't.

ASX is a launcher file, a text file that has a link to the WMV file. 
Can you post the content of your ASX file?  You should be able to open
it in Notepad.  Can you play the WMV files by entering the URL in
Windows Media Player (e.g., mms://.....)?
