Is there a way to re-authenticate a client while in the same IE 4 browser session?

If an IE 4 browser is already in a client-authenticated SSL v3 session, then
without exiting the browser, I need to kill the current v3 session and
re-authenticate the client by requesting a different cert before letting them
into a new v3 session. I call a server API to kill the v3 session on the
server side, but IE remembers the last certificate it has presented to the
server and won't prompt me to reselect another cert. It decides on its own
to re-submit the same cert for authentication. As a result, authentication
fails.

Netscape, however, prompts me to reselect a cert if it detects that the vs
session has been terminated on the server side. This is exactly what I want.

Any advice is appreciated.
