This is probably an extraordinarily obvious question, but it's something
I'm not sure about. What, exactly, goes into the hash that gets
encrypted by a CA and forms the CA's signature on a certificate? The
logical answer to me would be the entire certificate: the CA makes a
hash of the certificate, encrypts it with their private signing key, and
that makes the signature. This way, there's never any ambiguity about
what goes into the hash. Is this correct? Probably not. Does anyone know
for sure?

Thanks,
Christian
