ok. we all know it's a good idea to prototype things as it helps you
understand the problem (or build confidence in a design if it turns out to
be correct).

microsoft hasn't left themselves enough time this time round, but the
possibility of having another shot at it (nt 5.1, nt 6, nt 7) isn't ruled
out. this leaves paul with the awkward job of finding a "minimal
improvements" situation (but this is microsoft's problem) and explaining
to the rest of us that nothing further can be done. this time.

i'm going to assume that some people cannot acknowledge publicly what
their plans are, or do not have clearance to commit to strategic decisions
on this list. right, that's out the way.

given that the rest of us (non-microsoft) are going to need to implement
some of this stuff, and given that there are likely to be more than a few
CIFS servers and CIFS clients out there, could as many who _can_ publicly
do so commit to designing some extensions to the CIFS protocol, for a
future version (cifs-v1-0.2?)?

can anyone commit to making either a full or a prototype implementation of
the full cifs-v1-0.1 and full-or-prototype cifs-v1-0.2?

microsoft is in the position of having implemented draft-cifs-v1-0.1,
which is an advantage and a disadvantage. i want to see microsoft
involved, but not to the point where they hare off and mess it up for
everyone else. that applies for the usual trick of being "just a little
bit" incompatible with existing protocols as much as anything.

i am prepared to commit some of my time to prototyping a future version of
cifs (to understand the issues) and as a demonstration and then as a full
version, for Samba (smbd, smbclient) for UNIX and smbfs (smb kernel client
for Linux).
