Ran into the same error.  Wrote a custom script to monitor and graph ping times.
 Ran the script solely without mrtg to yield my desired results.  Once ran in
mrtg, got the same error.

I simply commented the following line (using your line as an example)
#kMG[modems]: ,,

This suppressed the error.
