Even after the dvd audio lag bug had been fixed I still had a considerable delay playing mencoder generated avis. I could not figure out where that came from and thus resorted to using transcode with the -D switch or encoding with mencoder (cbr audio) and remuxing with avidemux (audio delay 500ms). (I always encoded on-the-fly since I was running out of hd space -> ripping was not an option) Just today by chance I played one of these files without using the arts sound driver (killall artsd, mplayer -ao alsa9) and guess what, the delay was gone. It also works fine when I set the audio buffer size to a very low value in the KDE Control Center. So now I have a bunch of avi files that are slightly out of synch, but at least I can tell you that it was not an mencoder problem. I don't know if that should be considered a bug in the arts ao driver? Guess not. Thanks for all your help and sorry for any confusion.
