True enough, I've also had problems with that kind of editing. But if
a program includes a special option to do it I assume it's as safe as it
can be.

Generally you don't. It's only in case something really screws up, like
a power failure. How often does that happen during a file modification
that lasts less than a second?

Not that I've ever used it ;). But it's worth mentioning.
