No its not.  Your problem is a 'feature' or redhat 5.1.  Half and half
compilers.  The c half is gcc 2.7.2.3.  The c++ half is egcs something. 
You gcc front end does not know about your egcs c++ backend.

The first thing I did when I installed redhat 5.1 is remove this half
and half scheme and install the redhat 5.0 compilers which were working.

I dont get that extra 10% percent performance, but i can sleep soundly
at night...

Other than dumping egcs, i have no idea how to fix this.  And yes, I
know that egcs is the coolest thing in the universe.
