Well, good news: problem solved.

Jason, the author of ImageZoom today was very responsive and quickly found,
that for some unknown reason, the key "magezoom.defaultGlobalZoom" in
about:config here didn't have a value anymore.

Manually adding the default value "100" cured my problem and so far, his
latest build 0.2.7 now eventually behaves well here, too :-)
