This just occurred to me on a CPython repo clone:

$ hg sum
parent: 80240:bd1db93d76e1 
 Issue #5765: Merge from 3.3
branch: default
commit: (clean)
update: 18713 new changesets (update)
#       ^^^^^ huge number here

$ hg up
493 files updated, 0 files merged, 20 files removed, 0 files unresolved

$ hg sum
parent: 81158:f173c2e92b64 tip
#       ^^^^^ going from 80240 to 81158 doesn't sound like 18713 changesets
#             have really been applied to my working copy

commit: (clean)
update: (current)

$ hg version -q
Mercurial Distributed SCM (version 2.4.1+6-ebc0fa067c07)
