I would not use the KWord in KOffice 1.0.  Install the latest beta of KOffice 
1.1 and definitely use KOffice 1.1 when it comes out in August.

I use the latest beta and have had only rarely crashes.  Most of the crashes 
are caused by importing complex MS Office documents that the KOffice filters 
can not handle yet.

I am in the process of switching from StarOffice 5.2 to KOffice 1.1.   
StarOffice is superior at importing MS Office files for the moment.
