Just read an interesting article:

It describes the dmidecode tool, and the fact that the info provided by BIOSes 
is not reliable. 

What caught my attention was the mention of Red Hat 5 installing fine, but Red 
Hat 6 having a problem that was eventually traced to the BIOS lying about 
supporting APM. This reminded me of the periodic discussions here on install 
problems that are fixed by specifying various combinations of NOAPIC, NOLAPIC 
and NOACPI.

Perhaps some of the people who have had this problem could run dmidecode (you 
have to be root to do so; no command line arguments needed) and see what it 
reports. I'm curious.
