It may be no help at all, but I have a CanonN1240U scanner that is detected 
automagically by Linux Mandrake 9.1 and 9.2, but as a Plustek scanning 
device. It may be possible to manually try to register it to the system as 
something it is not? I have had some success configuring printers like this, 
and certainly monitors.
