I gave up on mdkonline (always telling me there was an update but would
never
download it) and use
sudo urpmi.update -a && sudo urpmi --auto-select

I've used easyurpmi to add various different update sources to the list
urpmi will
update from (http://easyurpmi.zarb.org) and added myself to the /etc/sudoers
list to run the sudo command (see man visudo). Then added this as an alias
in my .tcshrc file (assuming you use tcsh as your bash shell) with the line
alias update "sudo urpmi.update -a && sudo urpmi --auto-select"
so that all I need to do is type update and the rest is automatic

Before 2007 was released I gave FC 5 a go. I must say that I like yum -y
