mdk8.1: "mc" crashes when run as root, this is the output I get

$ mc

GLib-CRITICAL **: file gstrfuncs.c: line 1194 (g_strcasecmp): assertion
`s1 != NULL' failed.

Segmentation fault (core dumped)

$

has anyone else seen this error? anyone know a solution? looks like its
back to vi for the moment :)
