After further review, I think there is something wrong with hal - the
service haldaemon won't start (fails) but there is no error.  I checked
various logs as well without finding any errors.

I'm using the latest version in Cooker:  hal-0.5.7.1-7mdv2007.0

That may explain why USB devices won't automount . . .
