------- Comment #7 from kelk1@comcast.net  2005-08-31 22:23 -------
Read post #4. Try replacing 'shift_toggle' with 'shifts_toggle' in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf

Also (but that is unrelated), replace libglx.a with libglx.so in the same file.

description:
There is a communication pb between GNOME and X.

The gnome-keyboard-properties application crashes when I click on the 'Add'
button on the Layouts page (currently selected are US English w/ISO9995-3 and
Russian Phonetic). Keyboard model is Generic 104-key PC

This is consistent with my xorg.conf:

Section "InputDevice"
    Identifier "Keyboard1"
    Driver "kbd"
    Option "XkbModel" "pc104"
    Option "XkbLayout" "en_US,ru"
    Option "AutoRepeat" "500 30"
    Option "XkbVariant" "basic,phonetic"
    Option "XkbRules" "xfree86"
    Option "XkbOptions" "compose:rwin,grp:shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll"
EndSection

These settings are reflected in the applet, but everytime I try to change
anything, it fails or crashes. On the 'Add' button, it crashes with:

** (gnome-keyboard-properties:6113): CRITICAL **: XkbGetKeyboard failed to get
keyboard from the server!

If I try to set a new keyboard model, an error dialog is shown:
Error activating XKB configuration. It can happen under various circumstances:
        - a bug in libxklavier library
        - a bug in X server (xkbcomp, xmodmap utilities)
        - X server with incompatible libxkbfile implementation

        X server version data:
        Mandriva Linux (X.Org X11 6.9, patch level 0.cvs20050810.5mdk)
        60899900

$ xprop -root | grep XKB
_XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP(STRING) = "xfree86", "pc104", "en_US,ru",
"basic,phonetic", "compose:rwin,grp:shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll"
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xfree86", "pc104", "en_US,ru", "basic,phonetic",
"compose:rwin,grp:shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll"

$ gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd
layouts = [en_US       basic,ru        phonetic]
model = pc104
overrideSettings = false
options = [compose     compose:rwin,grp        grp:shift_toggle,grp_led
grp_led:scroll]

All this looks all right, I cannot see anything wrong. This setting was working
a few days ago, before the switch to xorg-6.9 and gtk+-2.8
