------- Additional Comments From dvgevers@xs4all.nl 2004-10-31 18:59 -------
I was never able to clear my downloads history (I guess there is a bug for this
already). So the downloads.rdf grew to be quite big. Now I decided to edit it
manually and remove all items. Bingo: startup time is reduced to normal proportions!

I also recently got Firefox from a mozilla tarball which I installed entirely in
home/userid.
Strikingly, this one remains faster than the Firefox installed from rpm!

Closing.

description:
Firefox is supposed to be lighter and faster than Mozilla; but it isn't:

I compared various browser from the moment of pressing the menu entry until the
startup page is displayed (for each browser this is the same local file):

Dillo (from current Cooker rpm) 4 sec
Galeon (from current Cooker rpm) 10 sec
Firebird (from mozilla tarball in ~/) 13 sec
Epiphany (from current Cooker rpm) 18 sec
Mozilla (from current Cooker rpm) 18-20 sec
Firefox (from current Cooker rpm) 35-39 sec
Konqueror (from current Cooker rpm) 40 sec

all were timed on several occasions under equal circumstances on a PII running
IceWM, which proves Firefox takes twice as long to start as Mozilla & Epiphany
and 3 times as long as Galeon and Firebird. This is not the efficiency that is
claimed on the Mozilla-Firefox website. Could anything be done to improve this?
Thanks
