This did the trick to fix tpb for me:
/etc/X11/xinit.d 

[ -x /usr/bin/tpb -a -r /dev/nvram ] && sleep 15 && /usr/bin/tpb -d

Notice the sleep 15 delay. That way it will start almost after the session is
loaded and the permissions are set. I didn't have any problems after this.

There seems to be a problem with tpb, because it is not started on login
anymore. However, when I execute the script /etc/X11/xinit.d/tpb after logging
in from the shell, it starts without problem. 

The possible problem could be race condition with PAM, which does not assign
permissions to /dev/nvram soon enough. Adding a sleep statement to the script
could work this around. This started to happen when I switched my Thinkpad to udev.
