I'm not so sure that's a valid example any more:
$ rpm -q postfix
postfix-2.1.0-0.20040209.18mdk

With the use of alternatives, the only packages that really can't co-exist 
are the -devel packages (ie db3-devel vs db4-devel etc).

But, I think there is space for a bit more control over how much gets 
installed (no, not the return of the slider, but maybe being able to 
choose the level of packages that get installed  - per category maybe - 
?).
