Allright, I found the bug in KDE's bugzilla: 
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=66784 
 
In short, it is apparently a bug in qt. There are two ways to fix it: 
 
1) to apply patches from qt-copy in the qt 3.2 branch 
2) use qt 3.3, which doesn't have this bug 
 
This is my understanding from the thread.

in normal mode jpg images are displayed but
in fullscreen mode I see just a black window

With Mandrake 9.2 it works fine (kuickshow is my favorite imageviewer) !
