Since falling back to those RPMS I can once again run KDE programs from 
Gnome.  It is good to know what the problem has been.  I haven't tried 
running tightvnc server from KDE yet, but I will be surprised if that 
doesn't work now.  Thanks for posting those files.

However, even though Konqueror can be run now from Gnome, and it seems to 
work normally during use, it crashes on exit.  This is the KDE Crash Handler
