When I tried to configure X during the installation it detected the video card
correctly. I went to test the config and I got a message asking if the screen
looked correct, I selected yes then the screen went black. I waited for about 5-
6 minutes and nothing happened so I rebooted the machine. Since the install
process was at the end linux loaded up ok but no X. I typed startx after I
logged in as root and it would not load. I knew this would happen because I
have been looking around at linux-laptop.net and found people with the same
laptop to have problems with the video card under linux

here
http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/dell.html

and here
http://www.jimsdojo.com/reports/dell2650.html

That is were I got the link for the drivers

2) I tried to on my laptop but I do not have rpm-build installed on it and I
don't know how to get it installed without using the gui. I have another
machine with mandrake 9.0 and I installed rpm-build and tried but I got a lot
of errors when I typed rpmbuild --rebuild.

3) When I tried to build it on my linux box with mandrake 9.0 it started to
work but I got all kinds of errors.

4) when I install the kernel driver rpm file as root It installed, then I get
an error module failed to load. Then it says installation sucessful.

5) everything works fine up until the end then I get the error (EE) Failed to
load module nvidia.

From the research I have done everyone has the same problem with the video
driver that comes with the kernel and have to use the drivers that are on
NVIDIA's website. Most of the people that got the drivers on NVIDIA's website
to work used redhat 7.3 or 8.0. I just wonder if there is a way someone can fix
the drivers so when Mandrake (or whatever distro) detects the Nvidia graphics
card for my Dell inpiron 2650 then they will work without having to intall
seperate drivers. Of course if I can get the GUI to work eitherway I would be
happy. Thanks for the help.

Seth

I have a Dell Inspiron 2650 and I installed Mandrake 9.1 RC 1 and the
installation was great. When I configured X and tested my settings the screen
went black and nothing happend. I rebooted and went to NVIDIA's website here
http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_display_1.0-3123

Installed the kernel driver file and the glx driver file, I followed the
instructions and edited XF86CONFIG-4 file type startx and it almost works then
I get a failed to initialize NVdriver kernel module. My video card is a 16MB
DDR NVIDIA GeForce2.-thanks

Seth
