I can absolve xmms at this point. 
 
I retrograded to xmms-1.2.6-0.pre1.2mdk an still have the same
symtoms.  So it may be the fault of the kernel sound support, or
due to the level of support for the c-media CM8738.  Pointers 
accepted with enthusiasm!
