Oh, good heavens, I knew I was missing something totally obvious. I never
noticed the paragraph environment!

I had not used leterine in over a year and clearly forgot everything I had
learned.

    I suspect the reason the insertion commands are disabled when the
    cursor is in the paragraph with the drop-cap is that the developers
    of the package didn&#39;t expect (and/or didn&#39;t want) you to try
    inserting a drop-cap mid-paragraph.<br>
