That may be the problem.  I have an external template for "xfig with
pdflatex".  I understand this isn't necessary with lyx-1.4, and my problems
with keybindings may also be leftovers from lyx-1.3.5.

I'll try moving my ~/.lyx to ~/.lyx13 and see what happens.  Lyx 1.4
may be stable enough for work.  I can always resurrect lyx1.3 if necessary.
