No, there's no reason for this behaviour. And I wouldn't call this "addition
of functionality", but a real bugfix (the terminology is important in the
current development phase ;-)). This is bug 880 BTW:

IMHO both of these issues should be fixed for 1.4 (though I don't have time to
look at the patch right now).
