If you by normal text means \textrm{some text} try to bind font-free to
a key of your choice, I think it does what you want.

Didn't it used to be C-spacebar? However try M-m spacebar.

Look at Edit->Math you have 
M-w d row delete
M-w i row insert
M-c d column delete
M-c i column insert
