Fote tweaked the NSL fork mods pretty carefully, and quoting from his most
recent bug fixes:

* Close both descriptors of the pipe() for the NSL_FORK enabled code
in HTTCP.c. The distributed code was closing only one of them on
completed gethostbyname() calls, and neither on 'z'aps. - FM

I think, Bela, you really will have to check the latest code set and
weed out what is no longer applicable. Otherwise there is no way to know
what is worth keeping. Thanks.
