Ah. Since this discussion it seems that arch has been added to
which_patch which should eliminate this kind of confusion in the
future.

Unfortunately I have problems with the 2.4.20 rh kernel being to
"patchy" in the sense that the semi-binary Scali SCI drivers doesn't
work (they require an exported sys_call_table and other things it
seems).

So, I'll probably have to poke at the vanilla patches until they
compile on x86 and hope that there isn't anything essential missing.
It would really be helpful if the vanilla patch at least compiled on
x86, but I guess that requires too much effort :(.
