James,

Sounds like it is trying to create a device node in the /dev
directory.

A simple way to figure out what is going on is to run
tcpdump on the server and watch the NFS traffic.

Try this on the server:

   tcpdump port nfsd >/tmp/out

Then, boot the workstation.  Once the workstation is
completely booted, break out of the tcpdump with a Ctrl-X.

Then, take a look at the /tmp/out file with your favorite
editor.  

   vi /tmp/out

Search for 'ERROR: Read-only file system'

Once you find that line, look at the previous line and
it should give you an indication of what file it is trying
to create.

If that doesn't work, then just try searching for 'ERROR'.

You will probably see lots of errors, but mostly because
it is looking for files that don't exist.  For the most part,
you can ignore those.
