Joerg,

When I've seen this error in the past, it was because the
loopback (lo) wasn't configured.

Check the rc.local script, make sure it is setting up the loopback
interface.  It should have:

  ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1 netmask 255.0.0.0 broadcast 127.255.255.255

Let us know if that takes care of it.
