And the answer is: YES! At least, partly...

I swapped the original initrd* files in /srv/tftpboot/boot with those
from the functioning server - and the client continued to boot. The
"lspcon" error message still appears, but it doesn't seem to have any
impact on booting.

Then it tried to mount the image, but instead made a reset and started
all over. So I swapped the images, too, and now it would correctly boot
into the image, and I could log in via the client into the GUI. All
programs seem to be there, though a lot of settings don't apply, of
course, because it is a different $HOME etc.

It did not boot into 64 bit kernel, no idea why, but at least 32 bit, so
as a proof of concept it was ok.

So I would ask the maintainers of the kernel for openSuse to look how to
patch it so I can re-install and go along with it.

If that isn't possible, I would have to copy everything from the
original system into the new one, including the $HOMEs, some other
software, all setting files etc. to make the original kernels and images
run on the new system. Maybe I would be successful, as meanwhile I guess
I have made tons of notes on how I setup the system, but I guess it
would be easier to start with a patched kernel... ;)

Regards
Rolf
