Hi John

Apologies for the delay in responding.

eSpeak, and Festival, together with a number of other engines are purely
TTS - Text To Speech. These are quite advance and utilising Speech
Despatcher can work well on a thin client setup as long as the Client part
of Speech Despatcher can be run as a local app on the clinet.

Text To Speech - TTS - engines are, as has been said, a much more
complicated beast. There are at least two stub projects, one by IBM and one
by Sun, that were started at the turn of the decade and aren't much more
than proof of concept. There are other TTS engines out there for the Linux
platform but most are specific for the MID and Mobile hardware.

The current way that seems to be best of breed in the Linux A11Y User
Community is to run a Windows system through WINE with varying results.

There is at least one other project that I know of, but can't find at the
moment, that is building on Sun's and IBM's original stubs, and are having
some success with, but would certainly have to be run as a local app.

If you want to pursue further I suggest contacting the Gnome accessability
list or IRC.

HTH

Ian

Subject: [Ltsp-discuss] Speech to text application

Hi,

Our Learning Center specialist has requested a speech to text application to
help with students who have learning disabilities, so I'm looking for a
speech
to text application to install and use on our thin clients, or on a stand
alone Edubuntu work station. I see applications for text to speech, such as
espeak and festival, but really nothing for speech to text.

Suggestions or ideas please.

Thanks,

John
