Peter it was so easy and obvious that I can't remember what I did. I have an 
ubuntu chroot ltsp on CentOS systems displaying the CentOS theme and likewise 
SuSE displaying SuSE theme. I think it was no more than installing the themes 
in /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share

I have not tried the boot splash, I just use text ie no splash boot parm
