Graham,

take a look at the mailing list archives for march/april.
There was a thread "using tmpfs, also knowm as shmfs".
You'll need a custom kernel, though. Support for virtual memory aka tmpfs
aka shmfs is not available for the ltsp standard kernels as it is not
compiled in.
