I have been doing some reading and from what I can put together, I think it is
possible to create a system that boots off a floppy and contains all the PCMCIA
components within the initial boot ROM image.
There wouldn't be any need for a mini linux install on a floppy that contains the
PCMCIA components.
I haven't had much time to actually try it out as snowboarding has been awesome this
year. I will probably have something more definite by the end of the week.
Happy New year all

Pleeeese tell us when you had any kind of success!

a friend suggestet: treat it like a ISA-Card,
that means put ehterboot on a floppy and boot that
- this might work on some laptops.
my idea: to have a boot-floppy or boot-CD
with a kernel image + a little root filesystem,
that has everything to setup the PCMCIA-Card.
this is already working on my laptop:
*Boot Knoppix-linux from CD
*turn off swap to stop the local HD
*stop the local X-Server
*start the local X-Server with X -query <server-IP>
this is slow and manual, but it is possible to make
you own knoppix-CD that boots faster and has an LTSP-like
startscript that does all this work automatically.
