I really hope I'm not sending this twice...I think I got confused by
the egroup archive site. Anyway, I haven't seen this in the archives,
so I'm going to try again. Thanks!

I recently became system administrator of a facility where some
significant changes to the printing system were planned before my
arrival. We used to simply forward all of the print jobs on our Unix
systems (Digital Unix 3.2 and 4.0) to our soon-to-be-retired VMS
systems, which dealt with them appropriately. Now, with the removal of
the VMS machines, we need to find a different solution.

Anyway, we are going to use a low-use DU machine running lprNG as our
print server, with the NT machines connecting through Samba. We have
lprNG installed, and we can print both text and postscript from the computer
(andrew) to the printer (a HP 5M). Samba seems to be working fine,
too. The only problem we have remaining is I can't seem to get filters
to work properly.

It is my understanding that you can use filters to change how the
output is handled (banner pages; duplex printing, 1up/2up, etc), but I'm
having the feeling something isn't working right. As an exercise in
manipulating filter settings, I tried to modify the banner page
printed. I modified psbanner to print the "fancy" banner page and
started playing around with the settings in the printcap file...and
nothing. I tried it with and without sb, with psfilter and with
CTI-ifhp. I always got the same four line banner page. From looking at
testbanner, it seems as if psbanner is never being called (it prints
rows of asterixes across the top and bottom). I've looked through the
documentation for lprNG, psfilter, and psbanner, and it seems as if
everything is set up right. Do you see something I don't? Here's my
printcap entry:

hpioroom
    :af=/var/adm/lpd/hpioroom
    :lf=/var/adm/printlog/hpioroom_err
    :lp=text@hpioroom
    :rw
    :sd=/var/spool/lpd/hpioroom
    :ab
    :sb
    # PSfilter filters
    :if=/usr/local/lib/filters/psfilter/psif debug=5
    :of=/usr/local/lib/filters/psfilter/psof -Tbanner=off debug=5
    :bp=/usr/local/lib/filters/psfilter/psbanner
    :bl=Seq\: $-'j Class\: $-'C User\: $-'n Job\: $-'J Date\: $-'t

    # CTI-ifhp filters
    # :if=/usr/local/lib/filters/CTI-ifhp/ifhp debug=5
    # :of=/usr/local/lib/filters/CTI-ifhp/ofhp -Tbanner=off debug=5
    # :bp=/usr/local/lib/filters/CTI-ifhp/banner.sh
    # :bl=$-'C:$-'n Job: $-'J Date: $-'t

Thanks alot for any help you can give.
