Hi,

Your question is contextual, but you left too many variables out for me to answer it \
briefly.

The first line of folks you should be asking your question to are your data center \
folks. I don't know if they're expecting you to do any sort of funky routing to get \
from your rack to the cloud.

If not, then you need to figure out if you're planning on doing any sort of L3 stuff \
(BGP, etc.) into your infrastructure, because if so, you'll want to put a router up \
there.

Personally, I would be loathe to put my load balancer ahead of any switching \
infrastructure. I don't like using content switches for actual switching, but that's \
a personal philosphy. Cisco makes some great fairly inexpensive (for Cisco) L3 \
capable switches (2960G L3 series) that I would put in front of my load balancers.

Finally, and this is a biggie: Security. Assuming your CSS is going to be load \
balancing some sort of web infrastructure, all one would need to do is comprimise a \
single networking device to get access to your entire back end. At the very least put \
a firewall between your uplink and your load balancer.

If you have any follow-up questions, shoot.

-Tal

Subject: [load balancing] Silly Question CSS 11000

Hi,

This may seem like a stupid question so apologies.

We will be collocating some servers in a data centre and will be provided
with a 100MB Ethernet connection by the ISP which needs to be plugged into
our equipment.

Do we need a router for the CSS to function? i.e. can the incoming internet
feed be directly plugged into the CSS etc

Example (Router)

Internet Feed > Router > CSS > LB Servers

Example (No Router)

Internet Feed > CSS > LB Servers

If a router is required can you please recommend one from Cisco (with SDM)

Thanks
