The Nortel (Alteon) Application switch will do URL hashing using a
configurable length from 1 to 255 bytes. It's a fairly common feature,
most LB vendors support it.
Not sure if they're any cheaper than Netscalers though.

Subject: [load balancing] URL hashing
Hey all....I think I may have asked this before, but what other hardware
LB solutions out there have layer-7 URL hash balancing ?
Specifically, I'm wondering about ones that can be defined by a URL
length to be used for the hashing. My experience is with Netscalers,
but I'd love to know if there are cheaper ones out there that do the
same.
example:
http://images.blah.net/abcd/wxyz/blah.jpg
where a URL hash length of 10 (the "/abcd/wxyz" )
thanks,
john
