I usually set my bigip tcp timeouts to some slightly higher value than
is set on my servers. Find out what your ssh server's timeout is and
bump that up by 5 minutes on the bigip. Timeouts are a good
thing...keeps memory from being used by connections that have been idled
for days.

Subject: [load balancing] F5 BIG-IP - disabling TCP idle connection
timeout for services

Hello,

I am new to load balancers and am setting up an F5 BIG-IP for the first
time to load balance a web application across two app servers.

In the configuration I am setting up then the internal and external
VLANs are on different subnets, and the internal subnet is not routable
from the outside. To allow ssh access to the servers being load
balanced I have created a pool and virtual server like the following one
for each server:

pool linuxapp1_ssh {
   member 192.168.1.7:ssh
}
virtual 192.168.0.7:ssh unit 1 {
    use pool linuxapp1_ssh
}

By default services have a TCP idle connection timeout of 1005 seconds.
Because of this my ssh sessions often time out. I would like to disable
the timeout with b service ssh timeout tcp 0 Could this cause problems?
If so what sort of timeouts do people use in practice? What about HTTP
- I guess one would not expect HTTP connections to last for very long
anyway.

Thanks,

Francis.
