The CR number for the cookie affinity problem was 26211, and if you contact F5 \
(assuming this is the problem) they should be able to provide you with the following \
hotfixes: bsd.anip.cr26221 bsd.smp.cr26221

PTF5 is supposed to be available soon..

Alan,
What version of BIG-IP are you running? 4.5PTF2 (and I believe 3 too) had some \
serious problems with load balancing and cookie persistence. Client persistence \
works ok, though PTF4 fixed the problem.

Subject: [load balancing] F5 big IP load balance problem with HTTP session cookie
Hi folks,
I'm using a F5 BIG IP to load balance http traffic to my pool of servers. The method \
used for persistence is HTTP cookie insertion, but we experiment some trouble as some \
users lose their HTTP sessions..
The F5 configuration has been verified by people from F5 and seems correct.
In my servers' logs i'd have something like that :
Server 1 :
2003-05-05 01:11:05 client_IP_Adress - server1_IP_Adress 80 GET /somepage -
2003-05-05 01:11:05 client_IP_Adress - server1_IP_Adress 80 GET /LoadBal/empty.asp - \
... +persist=554346688.20480.0000;+ASPSESSIONIDAASDDAQD=LACDBBJCMBPFHHAEDNBC
+AAIC
2003-05-05 01:11:05 client_IP_Adress - server1_IP_Adress 80 GET /somepage - ...
+persist=554346688.20480.0000;+ASPSESSIONIDAASDDAQD=LACDBBJCMBPFHHAEDNBC
+AAIC
2003-05-05 01:11:05 client_IP_Adress - server1_IP_Adress 80 GET /somepage - ...
+persist=554346688.20480.0000;+ASPSESSIONIDAASDDAQD=LACDBBJCMBPFHHAEDNBC
+AAIC
2003-05-05 01:11:05 client_IP_Adress - server1_IP_Adress 80 GET /somepage - ...
+persist=554346688.20480.0000;+ASPSESSIONIDAASDDAQD=LACDBBJCMBPFHHAEDNBC
+AAIC
Then The user gets here although his session had already started on server 1 !
Server 3:
2003-05-05 01:11:06 client_IP_Adress - server3_IP_Adress 80 GET \
/LoadBal/Create_user.asp - .. \
+persist=571123904.20480.0000;+ASPSESSIONIDAASDDAQD=LACDBBJCMBPFHHAEDNBC +AAIC
2003-05-05 01:11:06 client_IP_Adress - server3_IP_Adress 80 GET /somepage - ..
+persist=571123904.20480.0000;+ASPSESSIONIDAASDDAQD=LACDBBJCMBPFHHAEDNBC
+AAIC
;+ASPSESSIONIDGQQGGURQ=AHNONNICFONKCFEHIDKMOOCN
The user now has 2 ASPsessionIDs and lost his initial persist cookie, and was \
switched to this server
...
...
...
Server 2 :
etc ..
same things happens here .. the users gets a third aspsessionId and a different \
"persist" cookie corresponding to this server !
Any help would be appreciated
Alan
