So I'm trying to write a script to automate disabling the real server in the
Alteon when the server goes down. I have 2 questions:

- What's the best way to automate this? Telnet or SNMP?
- If I only have one real in the group that went down and the
backup came online, will the backup still operate after I disable the real?

Thanks
Yanal

I only have one Alteon. I think I will setup sitescope to monitor the server
and launch a script to do what I want with the Alteon when the server goes
down.

Thanks,
Yanal

There is currently no built in method to accomplish this, other than the
creative VRRP scenario described below. Which could look something like...
                          |--Alteon1----ServerA
                          |
Internet---Router---L2
                          |
                          |--Alteon2----ServerB
Alteon1 - VRRP Master, preemp dis, sharing dis
Alteon2 - VRRP Backup, preemp dis, sharing dis
Switches will have the same VIP but different reals, no backup servers. The
only problem I see with this scenario is that when you decide that
Alteon1-ServerA can take over, existing sessions that were on
Alteon2-ServerB will be orphaned since all packets will now be forwarded to
Alteon1-ServerA. One would need to /oper/slb/dis ServerB before bringing
ServerA back on-line to allow fro ServerB's sessions to end gracefully.
If you have only one switch, and are using the backup server method, you
will probably have to employ an external script or use SNMP to disable A
until you're ready. Using backup servers will allow the graceful
continuation of sessions on ServerB while ServerA takes new sessions when
it's brought back on-line.

Well, Here is what I have:

- two servers A and B. A syncs content to B as it's updated from
customers.
- If A fails, I want to go to B.
o I don't want to go back to A until I sync B with A, because A will
be missing content and I don't want the Alteon to Automatically bring A back
in until I'm done with it.

Is there a way to accomplish this?

This would work with VRRP pre-emption disabled
to stop the primary Alteon (and therefore Real
Server) taking over again.

would it not be possible to configure 2 alteons on in
hotstandby mode. connect the two real servers directly to
the alteons and monitor for reals.
if the first server fails the the active switch should also
failover to the hotstandby switch.
as the real server are directly connected real server 1 is
no longer visible all connections go to the second server
