I hate to sound stupid, but why wouldn't you just load my SRAM image and 
forget all the extra steps?

I use TFTP (smaller than wget) in my image BTW.

Maybe reboots.  The original openAP tried to do the reboot in the shell 
code, which gets overwritten on the ROM.  During decompression of 
'reboot' things often barf.

Bleh, wget, bleh.  I'm not sure why the instant 802 folks went with wget 
on this.  Every other product on the market uses tftp to get images, 
configuration, etc.

I turned all this shit off in the driver.  The write process involves 
multiple tries, 5 are allowed before a 'hard' failure is flagged.  The 
driver is reporting each time it does a retry, not hard failures.

Upgrades from my image via tftp should be pretty darn clean.  I'm 
working on a new image with newer kernel && tools.  Might be a bit but 
I'll post when it's usable.
