The setups
	Linux/1394b --- 1394a hub, S400 --- Linux/1394b
	Linux/1394b --- Linux/1394b --- 1394a hub
	Linux/1394b --- Linux/1394b
all yield ~11 MB/s for scp. This is poor, considering that I already
got up to 18 MB/s between a Linux box and an 1394a OS X box.

Generally, establishing the link is somewhat fragile. Sometimes I had
to reload eth1394.

The setup
	Linux/1394b - 9-to-6-pin cable - 1394b HDD --- Linux/1394b
does *not* work at all: Ping says "Destination Host Unreachable". This
setup forces the bus to work at S400(A) and looks exactly like an S400B
bus. This coincides with a report that I got via personal mail that
eth1394 does not work on an S400B bus because no GASP packets are sent.
Apparently the 1394b fixes in Linux 2.6.18 were not quite complete.

But
	Linux/1394b - 9-to-6-pin cable - 1394b HDD --- Linux/1394b ---
		--- 1394a hub --- OS X/1394a
works again.

I filed my observations (lack of reliability, S400B bug) at
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8361 and
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8362
