Thanks for your input (and yours Ben).  I agree with Ben that generic
code to handle IEEE 1212 is the best route.  Unfortunately, my work
schedule is being altered such that I won't be able to work on it for a
couple months.  If someone else picks it up before I get to it, then
that's great.  If not, I'll be getting to it eventually.
