Whoa.... you need to do steps 2,3,4,5 before you do step 1.
That's your problem :). Otherwise you only have the original
routines in your kernel, so even if you manage to make bttv,
you'll still have linking and module loading problems.

You should use 2.4.18 instead of 2.4.17 for the patches to apply cleanly.
They should work for 2.4.19preX also.
