SHORT STORY

it works!
thank you very much (I was already on the edge of giving it back tomorrow)

LONG STORY

tried first to patch the 2.4.10 edition shipped with Suse 7.3
didn't work (either the kernel's really too old or I'm just too stupid)

downloaded 2.4.17, patched the 4 lines and did the gruesome (for me) walk
of guessing kernel options

nuked Suse hotplug setup

put following in boot script:
modprobe usb-uhci
modprobe hid
modprobe mousedev
modprobe keybdev

and this particular combination works

ummm... it's labeled "wake up"
and in the docs it says: "After the computer has resumed from the
suspended mode (sleep mode), press the Wake up Switch in upper part of the
PS/2-USB Adapter.
