There should be some error/log messages before
kernel or mount complaining that /dev/sda4 is not
a block device.  Try enabling more console log
messages:  Alt+SysRq+9 (if or after enabling
Kernel Hacking: Magic QysRq key).

Also, what's in /proc/scsi/scsi?
